Toyota C-HR enters compact CUV segment at LA Auto Show

LOS ANGELES, CA: Toyota capped off this year’s media days at the LA Auto show by unveiling the 2018 C-HR compact crossover.

C-HR stands for Coupe High Rider and will arrive in Toyota dealerships in the spring ushering a new contender into the red-hot Canadian compact CUV segment.

It actually appeared for the first time one year ago at the LA show as the Scion C-HR concept. With the demise of the Scion brand, the C-HR is back as a Toyota.

The C-HR is very highly styled in what the brand terms “Distinguished Diamond” looks starting from the nose with slim projector headlights which stretch back well over the top of the front fenders augmented by largish standard 17-inch and optional 18-inch alloy wheels.

The inside carries through the edgy styling with its “MeZone” driver oriented cabin with diamond patterns throughout featuring dual-zone climate control and a seven-inch infotainment touchscreen raised high on the centre stack. This is augmented by a color 4.2-inch driver info display between the two main gauges in the instrument cluster.

It will be powered by a 2.0-litre direct injection inline four-cylinder producing 144 hp and 139 lb/ft of torque on regular fuel with consumption figures yet to be announced.

D-HR is front engined with front drive and a CVT transmission. AWD is not available.

Suspension is a new MacPherson strut setup at front with a double wishbone rear system featuring rear shocks with urethane upper supports, a first for Toyota.

The CVT, with seven-speed sequential manual shift mode has a Sport setting at “steps up” ratio changes.

C-HR will be fitted with a full suite of driver/safety features including, as standard, Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) which is a multi-feature advanced active safety suite bundles cutting edge active safety technologies including Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection function (PCS w/PD) featuring forward collision warning and Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist function (LDA w/SA), Automatic High Beams (AHB), and Full Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC).

When it arrives in the spring, C-HR will be offered in two trim levels – XLE and XLE Premium with pricing to be announced when it goes on sale.
