WASHINGTON — The 2016 Toyota RAV4 compact SUV earned the highest five-star overall safety ratingfrom the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

On sale now at Toyota dealerships, the 2016 RAV4 received four stars in the front crash test, five stars in the side crash test and four stars in the rollover crash test.

The rating applies to front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions of the RAV4. NHTSA has not rated the2016 RAV4 Hybrid.

Standard safety equipment on the 2016 RAV4 includes antilock brakes, vehicle stability control, traction control and daytime running lights. A blind-spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on RAV4 SE and Limited models.

The RAV4 is equipped with eight airbags, including a driver’s knee airbag and a front-passenger seat cushion airbag designed to prevent occupants from sliding under the seatbelt.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the 2016 RAV4 the 2016 Top Safety Pick+ rating. The RAV4 received “good” scores in all Institute crash tests.

Key RAV4 competitors include the Chevrolet EquinoxFord Escape and Honda CR-V.
